Dopamine is unsed by the brain to synthesize norepinephrine.Numerous studies propose that disruption in the function of dopamine neurons is the central abnormality responsible for fibromyalgia symptoms. Research has shown fibromyalgia is associated with stress. Chronic stress reduces the ability of the brain to manufacture and release dopamine. Dopamine serves as the primary pain control mechanism in multiple regions of the brain. Dopamine also serves as the major inhibiting factor or brake on the secretion of the pituitary released female hormone known as prolactin. Dopamine is secreted into portal blood by hypothalamic neurons, binds to receptors on lactorophs, and inhibits both the synthesis and secretion of prolactin. Excessive secretion of prolactin – hyperprolactinemia – is a relatively common disorder in humans. Common manifestations of hyperprolactinemia in women include amenorrhea (lack of normal menstrual cycles) and galactorrhea (excessive or spontaneous secretion of milk). Men with hyperprolactinemis typically show hypogonadism, with decreased sex drive, decreased sperm production and impotence. Excessive prolactin production is the culprit blamed for 70% to 80% of erection failures. Such men also often show breast enlargement (gynecomastia), but very rarely product milk.
